INTRODUCTION
The VSV11/VS11 is a video graphics system consisting of 3 quad-size modules and a joystick assembly. The subsystem consists of an
H9273 backplane and the modules. The basic system is the VSV11 for QBUS-based systems. When the DW11
interface is added, the VSV11 becomes the VS11 for UNIBUS-based systems. For the VS11, because of the DW11
interface, the backplane is a DDV11-CK.
The basic VSV11/VS11 has the following modules.
- M7061 - Sync Generator / Cursor Control module
- M7062 - Image Memory module
- M7064 - Display Processor module
This basic system can be expanded with optional Image Memory modules and Sync Generator / Cursor Control modules for multi-channel
or multi-monitor operation. One Image Memory module provides one memory channel with either 512x512 2-bit, or 512x256 4-bit pixel
resolution and intensity. Additional Image Memory modules can be added to provide for
- single memory channel with 512x512 4-bit of pixel resolution and intensity for one system monitor, with no dynamic graphics.
- two memory channels each with 512x256 4-bit of resolution and intensity for one monitor with dynamic graphics.
- four memory channel system, each channel having 512x512 2-bit of resolution and intensity; paired channels would drive
separate monitors, each monitor could display independent dynamic graphics.
- four separate channels, each channel having either 512x256 4-bit or 512x512 2-bit of resolution and intensity for 4 independent
monitors with no dynamic graphics. Optional M7061 Sync Generator modules are required for each additional independent system monitor.
Summary
- VT11-type instructions including vector, point, graphplot, run-length and bitmap modes.
- LSI-11 bus NPR capability with 18-bit addressing.
- Output 4 or 16 grey levels, or 16 colors.
- Video output for VT100 (maximum of one VT100 per VSV11/VS11 subsystem).
- Sync capability to an external RS-170 source (with equal number of scan lines as the Sync Generator).
- Mix video from an external RS-170 source.
- Software- and joystick-controlled cursor. Cursor size and intensity is jumper-selectable (2 choices).
- Compatible with analog monochrome or RGB color monitors, 50 Hz or 60 Hz interlaced or non-interlaced.
VSV11 in BA11-SF box
This is how I got the system. It needs some cleaning, but looks to be in good condition. In the top is the M9405 that makes the
connection to the QBUS of the computer. This VSV11 was connected to a PDP-11/23PLUS running some version of RSX-11M+ and was
used for graphical design of stationary paper and letter enveloppes, to be printed by an offset printing machine.

INSTALLATION
The VSV11 option is as far as I know, normally installed in a separate BA11 box with its own power supply. At the rear side of
the rack is a bulkhead for the connection of the monitor (either an RGB color monitor, "standard TV set monitor"(RS-170),
or a VT100 terminal).

As you can see, there is also a 9-pin female DE connector called "Joystick" on the VSV11 bulkhead.
This sub-D connector connects the D|I|G|I|T|A|L H3060 joystick. The black plastic cover on the surface
right of the joystick is gone. I don't know whether the the two surface at both sides of the stick are push-buttons or "nothing".
I expected them to be buttons, but it seems they are in this H3060 "nothing".
